Missy ElliotMissy Elliot – Beep me 911

Just swung back into town after unexpectedly spending the festive season in Valencia. The weirdest Christmas moment for me was ending up at a Midnight Mass in a draughty old church in which they held up a plastic baby doll done up as baby Jesus which everyone lined up to kiss, with the Priest wiping off the drool and lipstick off inbetween.

Anyway, I have had these three tunes thematically lined up in my mind for a while. Over the years, although Missy Elliot hasn’t been on the heaviest of rotations on my stereo, and though I haven’t necessarily rated every single she’s put out, I’ve always had enormous amounts of respect for her creativity, her willingness to try something new and th efact that she has made it on her own terms in the profoundly patriarchal biz without being objectified.

This is the song that really caught my attention a long time ago… back when this sort of fractured break that Timbaland was so shit-hot at was something that hadn’t been done to death, and when I pretty much dismissed the whole r n’ b genre as been incapable of coming up with anything of creative worth. And then this just blew me away….

RIP James Brown, godfather of soul and wife beater. Hard to reconcile such a huge influence on music and such a plethora of amazing tracks with the less eulogised fact that he was convicted of domestic violence against his wife. It’s not so easy to gloss over considering this blog was more or less originally put together to promote a benefit party supporting victims of domestic violence.
