Brick - Dazz (Mike Clark Edit)
2007-02-10 by Kevvy K
This is something pretty random I’ve stumbled across… don’t know so much about either the original or the artist, although I’m planning on checking out more of both on the basis of this.
The Dazz Band cunningly formed their name from the almagamation of Danceable Jazz (lucky they weren’t playing Spanish Jazz) and were a funk/fusion band from Ohio who enjoyed a smattering of popularity in the early 80s. Mike Clark as far as I can tell, is a lesser known Detroit luminary who sometimes goes under the name of Agent-X, who released a white-label of disco edits back in 2004, of which only 400 were printed, so I don’t really fancy your chances of ending up with a copy of this. He also has some tracks on the “Detroit Beatdown” compilation that spawned the massive Carl Craig remix of Theo Parrish.
Anyway, this is stompy falsetto-funk of the highest order with breaks aplenty and loads of really excellent instrumentation all over it. Classic Wax have just put out a 12” re-issue of their hit Let It Whip.
Edit: OK, I have had it pointed out to me that I have been the victim of mislabelled MP3 files, and this isn’t actually the Dazz Band at all, it’s actually Brick. Apparently Dazz changed their name to the Dazz Band after the unrelated song ‘Dazz’ became an R&B hit for Brick in 1976. Decades on and its still causing confusion. Apologies and thanks to the eagle-eyed spotters out there for putting us straight.

This ain't the Dazz Band. The song is called "Dazz". The band is called Brick.
He's right y'know..its Brick. There was a great Mantronix remix of this from about 88…eleven minutes long. My copy has a ciggie burn at about 9 mins in, but there is a full shorter version on the flip
But hey, I've got this Mike Clark EP too..I though I was the only one. It's cool
Mike Clark's the business – he was hanging out with Hood, Mills and Mad Mike and was part of the thing they had going on before the birth of UR. I babbled at length about him in a previous post…
