More from those motherf*ckin geto boys
2007-06-13 by The Mighty AlboyGeto Boys – “Gangster of Love”
The Geto Boys are largely responsible for creating gangster rap. I’m not sure whether they were provoked by, or provoked the “parental advisory” stickers, but as the Double K’s previous post illustrates quite nicely, their output in the early nineties was so foul that- despite a depressing number of attempts- it has yet to be equalled in terms of excessive outright nastiness.
I’ve always thought that they were pretty aware of how ludicrous their gangster posturing is- this track being a case in point- they are on the verge of pissing themselves laughing at various points throughout. Who’d’ve thunked that this kinda stuff wouldve inspired so many weak imitators and spawned a multimillion dollar genre that continues to this day to do much to wreck and ruin hip hop’s reputation as a socially aware musical form.
All that aside, there are some ingenious rhymes here, and the sample of Steve Miller’s “Gangster of Love” is nothing short (sorry bushwick bill- glad to hear you’ve found god) of genius!
