The descent of Mang
2007-06-19 by Kevvy KRay Mang – Disco Four (Ray Mang’s Mangled Mix)
A wonderful re-cut of a mid-nineties nu-disco number (apparently.. haven’t had the pleasure of the original personally) that I again picked up on from listening to one of the many excellent mixes from DJ History, this time from Matthew and Jolyon who I believe are London-based and who, on the basis of this, play exceedingly fine disco, as Mr Kipling might have put it, had he not been just a marketing conceit.
Anyway, this kicks off the aforementioned mix, and it’s a taut JBsy disco-funk loop with lots of percussive interest and then lots of vinyl scrunching DJ-effects (is there a more technical term for this I wonder?) thrown in at random intervals so as to keep you on your toes.
This came out last year on Volume 2 of 33 1/3 Queen. There’s still low stock at Phonica (see below) and a tasty slab of vinyl to have I reckon. Oh, and the thread with a bit of discussion about the Matthew and Jolyon mix can be checked out here.
A couple of other not really particularly related plugs and stuff:
I just got back from Germany after spending a few weeks running around in fields (and more often in the Media Response Gazebo) trying to stop the G8 from happening. Thank God this year things are back on track in terms of people having the sense to try and shut it down rather than all of that Make Poverty History nonsense of trying to petition it to do stuff and in doing so give it extra legitimacy. Mercifully, there wasn’t a single white arm band in sight. Anyway, for anyone who wants an insight into how it was that you won’t find in your broadsheet, myself and some companer@s compiled the annual G8 2007 What’s how and what’s not list that you can check out here.
Some friends of mine have just published a really great book called DO IT YOURSELF – A Handbook for Changing Our World which is very practical, inspiring and in shops now.
“Climate change, resource wars, privatisation, the growing gap between rich and poor, politicians that don’t listen. Massive issues, but how can we make any difference?
This book shows how. It’s not a book about what’s wrong with the world, but a collection of dynamic ideas which explore how we can build radical and meaningful social change, ourselves, here and now. Covering nine themes, the book weaves together analysis, stories and experiences. It combines in-depth analytical chapters followed by easy to follow “How to Guides” with practical ideas for organising collectively for change.”
I was DJing at their launch do last week, but lack of ventilation combined with a sultry evening meant that everyone was outside on the balcony rather than enduring the stuffiness of the empty dance floor. Anyway, you can check out mroe about the book and buy it online here.

I used the player on the site for this one and, at around 1:36 or 1:37, you can hear the default beep from Windows. Just an FYI. Nice tune.
Original was on thirty three and a third queen (think it was a nu groove offshoot) Track was called Disco 4.2. I can send you an mp3 if you like, just drop me an email.
Cheers…Harri
