Tony Wilson RIP
2007-08-11 by Kevvy KNew Order – Temptation (Secret Machines Remix Full Length)
Sad news in the paper today that Tony Wilson, the influential figure who founded the Factory label in 1978 and the seminal nightclub the Hacienda, has died of a heart attack at the age of 57. Tony has been battling kidney cancer since the beginning of 2006, and was campaigning on behalf of fellow cancer sufferers after the NHS refused to pay for a £3,500-a-month drug which doctors recommended after chemotherapy failed to beat his cancer. Wilson said that “I used to say some people make money and some make history – which is very funny until you find you can’t afford to keep yourself alive.”
This is a very lovely, and appropriately mournful remix of one of my fave New Order tracks that we were listening to on Thursday night while sipping G&Ts on my friend´s rooftop terrace in Barceloneta, and we were all in agreement that it was well worthy of a post, so the sad news of Tony´s untimely demise makes it a fitting tribute for someone who played such a key role in so many bands that have played a key role in my life.
You can read the article about his death in the Guardian here.
In other Climate Camp news, the police have been instructed to use anti-terror measures against protesters, so that they can stop, search and detain without charge. Nice. Read the story in the Guardian here.

Hear hear. Joy Division, New Order, the Happy Mondays. I could have done without James but the world is certainly a duller place without him.
And it was only the other day I was watching 24 Hour Party People and thinking what a true character he really was. RIP Tony; you put the hours in and made your mark.
I knew the end might be near, bu it was still a shock to see the news on Friday night.
I dug out some of my JD, New Order, and Durutti Column vinyl and played it as a tribute.
rip Tony
A genius and a visionary. As simple as that. Pretty much the first person to put punk on TV in '76 (with "So It Goes") when everyone else was saying it was a joke.
I'm sorry but I won't have a word said against James… went a bit off the rails with 'stadium indie' (Simple Minds for people with baggy jeans?) in the early 90s but their 80s work ("Strip-Mine" and indeed the later 90s stuff ("Laid" etc) was a class act.
