Starlight, star bright... (Juan week pt 6)

StarlightModel 500 – Starlight (Soultek’s Falling Stars Mix)

Soultek, aka Steve Hitchell out of Chicago, gives our Juan the remix treatment with the subject one of my favourites, Starlight from the 1995 Deep Space LP. The warm, simple chord at the heart of the original plays backdrop to a regular orchestra of twinkly electronica reminiscent of the early 90s Artificial Intelligence releases. Lovely stuff, as if it wouldn’t be with Magic’s blessing.

You can pick this up on a double 12inch pack of Starlight mixes, three more from the Echospace boys (Hitchell and Deepchord’s Rob Modell from Detroit) and one from Convextion, aka Texan Gerard Hanson, producer of the awesome Miranda, which appeared on Derrick May’s Mayday mix and has recently been re-released itself.

Although Starlight is as mellow as they come, I remember hearing Juan play it at the End one fine night back in 1996 and it sounded completely amazing on the impressive sound system. I also remember fighting my way to the front of the decks post-set to lean over like some saucer-eyed groupie with my arm outstretched for a handshake with my hero. He took it with a certain element of distaste and pity but I guess it must happen to him all the time – see fellow blogger Cubik’s comment on The Chase posting below.
