The first time I heard ‘Sexy Woman’ (see below) was on a mix that Pete Rock did on Radio One (thanks to Alboy for recording it and later finding me a 7” copy). In the true multi referential style of Hip Hop this tune samples ‘Sexy Woman’ heavily, as well as updating Kool G Rap’s earlier version of ‘Truly Yours’. The horns from the classic Kool & the Gang track ‘NT’ are thrown in just for good measure.
This comes from the ‘Soul Survivor’ album which was released after Pete Rock had finished his first period of working with CL Smooth, and after the stuff that he did with INI, which I think is some of the finest Hip Hop ever to be made and is criminally underrated. Pete Rock has been making quality records for a long time. I do wish he wouldn’t get on the mic though.
