I Will Trance You

Gipsy – I Trance You

Coming from the heady days before Trance was a dirty word (1992 to be precise), I Trance You is probably better described as Prog House (again, from before Prog House was a dirty word!), and featured in some of Sasha’s seminal sets from before Sasha was a dirty word. In fact I’ve recently been greatly enjoying a few old Sasha mixes, which is what has prompted this posting.

After the floaty intro (which introduces the main “I Will Trance You” vocal hook early on) the track builds up gradually, starting with the amazing percussive bassline. Next the tribal drums make an appearance and elements are layered up until finally at 3.15 (pretty much exactly half way through the track) everything stops as the most beautiful synth melody drops. It’s hands in the air time alright, and then we’re off again as the beats and bass are brought back in, now underpinned by that gorgeous synth.

I absolutely love this tune. I can see huge scope for criticism that it is cheesy or even completely lame, but I stand by it: for me it displays a touching naïveté that reflects the hedonism of the time and that I can never really see being recovered in new dance music.

We had Gypsy’s Funk De Fino on here a while ago, and despite the different spelling I’m pretty sure they are one and the same Gipsy/Gypsy. Which just goes to show that with a decent producer Trance isn’t necessarily a dirty word.

    I think I still have the 12 around somewhere too, on Limbo. They were a top label in the beginning but seemed to lose their way a bit after a while (or my tastes changed). Top track this one, and I must admit that Funk de Fino is one of the DC-posted tracks that I play the most these days.
