Strutting their punky stuff

ShriekbackMy Spine is the Bassline

A nifty new compilation has caught my eye – Strut records, who used to put out some great Africa-flavoured collections some years back, is back in business, and has kicked things off with Disco, Not Disco – Post Punk, Electro and Leftfield Classics, 1974 – 1986. This is the third volume in the celebrated series that appeared in the early part of the century that helped to crystalise an emerging reappreciation of a long-neglected slice of musical history during the many years house domination. As you would expect, it comes with a wide range of tracks clustered on the one comp, from the shoutier, guitar orientated, UK end of the spectrum, through to the proto-grind of Les Liasons Dangereuses and the cult strangeness of Gina X.

This track is a particular favourite from – the first single in 1982 from Barry Andrew’s post-XTC band, Shriekback. Its a fantastically funk-driven post-punk number with a killer bass line courtesy of Gang of Four’s Dave Allen that received little commercial success at the time, but has been a popular dancefloor staple ever since.

As a little added treat.. this is a Youtube clip that has done the rounds a number of times, but well worth checking if you haven’t already. The Detroit classic ShareVari also features on this compilation – check out the accompanying moves in the Motor City from this music programme from 1982.
