Weird and wonderful

Normally when someone sends me something on my FAcebook Superwall, I delete it on principle, but ANOE Chris sent me the following clip, that I have had on somewhat obsessive rotation ever since – its of a track by Adriano Celentano, who I understand is a bit of a cultural mainstay in Italy, with a long career in music, film, comedy, and if his wikipedia page is to be believed, hula hooping.

There’s definitely evidence in favour of this assertion in the youtube clip, where he’s to be seen flicking his hips in time to the pounding beat like his life depended on it – but that’s not all there is to be savoured – its from 1974, and involves what looks like a synchronized cast of thousands, but is actually more like artfully placed mirrors, a mystery blonde woman who at one stage pulls off some “Fiddler on the Roof” moves (in keeping with the vaguely klezmeh-style musical influences) that make me go a bit funny inside, and all under the aegis of this strange, anglo-italian gibber-rap and a pounding, Stop Bajon-esque beat. Weird, and very, very wonderful.

I actually posted something by Adriano Celentano over a year go, called Disc Jockey that incorporates a lot of the elements of this song, but in a less manic and driven fashion, but that I still find very appealing. You can still download that version here .

Do check the youtube clip… so, so worth it.

Goddamn- this tune is just fantastic kev. Glad you reposted, as the original had fallen out of my own regular rotation, which shouldnta happened….

And so full of rework/edit/sample potential- it's got deep house and hip hop flavour that I'm sure would suit some of our coterie of bedroom/living room producers.

Reckon the original version has the edge over this one, but the youtube vid is utterly mesmerising, so still a spot on post- nice one!

Ace it most certainly is – nice one, Kev. Greg Wilson's got an edit of it coming out in a few weeks, titled "Adriano Italiano". You heard it here first (probably second – it's all over the DJH board…)

Just to let you know; that mystery blonde is italian superstar diva Raffaella Carrá and she is as big italian personality as Celentano.
scoop a bit about her to reveal mystery.
