Soon enough the bluebird has to fly

Tony Bennett and Bill Evans – Young and Foolish

Here’s one for Cardiff City... We haven’t had that many good old fashioned crooners on here and they don’t come much better at that than Tony Bennett. Here he’s more than capably accompanied by the great Bill Evans who many will be familiar with from his time in Miles Davis’ seminal Kind of Blue era sextet. His beautiful, understated style is the perfect foil for Mr B’s marvellous voice; they really are made for each other. Thanks to my brother Joe for getting this for Christmas for me. I’m with Mr P Rice – we really need a jazz category…

Yesterday and today I flew through the heart of the gales to Belfast and back – I’d like to have had longer there, but the quality guinness got me through the nervier moments in the air. Now I’m back at the ranch, marvelling at Paul Verhoeven’s Showgirls. I’m quite sure it’s deliberately bad – I mean, characterisation has never been his priority (I give you Total Recall, Starship Troopers, Basic Instinct…) but with this one, you get the feeling it was all about that standing ovation at the Razzies. I can’t wait for the swimming pool scene – second only to Team America in the race for the greatest cinema sex ever.

Jazz has been added to the categories, as has Balearic, although I'm still not entirely sure what these categories are for and if anyone actually uses them.

Well, this one's Jazz for starters. And I would have thought you of all people here would know how to use Balearic, Kev. ;-)

The category links down the side and at the bottom of every post allow people to filter which posted tunes are listed on the page. They are basically aids to navigating the 800+ postings on here, so people can locate stuff more easily.

So if someone is in the mood for more downbeat mellower tunes at the moment because it's Monday morning then they can click the p*soul category to just see those type of tunes.

Or if someone plays a tune from the front page which they love and it's categorised as electro they can click the electro link at the bottom of the post to check out some more of the same sort of thing.

As for adding Balearic as a category, I don't know that we've ever had much on here that can genuinely be classed as Balearic… which is probably a good thing! Most of it is a bit shit as far as I can tell (think Snappiness, Higher Than The Sun, The Grid, Enigma, etc.), although I'd be happy to be wrong about this if people know good Balearic stuff.

...and as to whether anyone actually uses them or not, I have no idea.

Would be interested to hear from anyone who does.

Examples of Balearic things that we have had on.. P Rice posted Stop Bajon by Tullio de Piscopo a while back.. I posted one of the Sueno Latino mixes a while back.. both of them great tunes. Didn't you even post a Little Fluffy Clouds mix?

  6. squeaker says (on Mar 13, 2008 @ 04:34 PM):

Yeah, he did – the Pal Joey mix. O ye of little Balearic faith, Double K. I heard Balearic described recently as 'Pop music that sounds good on drugs' which I thought was funny.
And I got the wrong end of the stick earlier – I thought Kevvy K didn't know what the specific new categories meant. Duh, sorry.

  7. The Double K says (on Mar 14, 2008 @ 05:22 PM):

Little Fluffy Clouds is not Balearic (and Pal Joey has probably never seen a spanish island in his life), and I also always thought of Sueno Latino as ambient house.

I guess maybe I'm thinking of a "Balearic" category as Balearic Beat (with its swing beats and chill-out feel). Stop Bajon doesn't have this sound (and none of the tunes you mention really), so maybe we're thinking the Balearic category is more for tunes that are Balearic by association (i.e. they get played in Spanish discos) rather than actual Balearic Beat?

  8. squeaker says (on Mar 16, 2008 @ 10:19 AM):

Yeah, I think so. Although Balearic Beat was inspired by the music being played in Ibiza clubs in the mid to late eighties, that music was determinedly eclectic and so is difficult to pigeon hole, hence the eternal debate. But you're right enough about Enigma; they were rubbish.
