Mad Professor & Pato Banton – King Step
Back in the early 90’s, when I was a wastrel student, there was a time when the album ‘Mad Professor Captures Pato Banton’ was never far from the record deck in the houses of myself and my friends. I hadn’t listened to it for years until a few months ago, when I discovered that the intervening years had not diminished my affections.
Some years after recording this album Pato Banton went on to top the charts with UB40, but I don’t begrudge him his later pop endeavours. As this tune quickly shows, the man can really ride a tune. What’s more, his lyrics are both conscious (‘you know that slackness is a thing I man do not respect’) and fun in a cheeky kind of way. As for the Mad Professor, he can always be relied upon to provide a heavy and spaced out rhythm track.
I’m not sure what the King Step is though. Answers on a postcard please.

We also had Gwarn up here back in the mists of time (http://dilate.choonz.com/index.php?id=420) – the whole LP is fantastic stuff.
There was a follow-up called Mad Professor Recaptures Pato Banton (http://www.discogs.com/release/918163), but it's nowhere near as good.
I remember when you posted Gwarn it blew my mind. Such a big tune and who would have thought Pato was such an emcee… The lyrics capture the 80's perfectly. As mentioned the album is also fantastic. Oil in me lamp, My Opinion need to be checked.
Respect as always…
There is actually a version of this tune on the UB40 album'Bagadarim'.The whole album is full of mcees(some good, some bad)chatting over UB40 tracks.
I use to like it when I was young the rhymes were so simple I could chat along to them.
hey pricey, how wierd – this made it to the top of a pile of cds which were the only ones we could find after we moved house recently…. and yes, sounding brilliant. all the doors open and last days of summer…
