In line with the whole rememberance thing, albeit slightly belated, here’s something from J Dilla who sadly passed away earlier this year. Last month at the Stonesthrow show in London the first half an hour of Peanut Butter Wolf’s set consisted entirely of songs from J Dilla’s sizeable back catalogue which really highlighted the breadth of stuff that he had a big hand in during his all too short life.
Lucy Pearl consist of Ali Shaheed Muhammad from a Tribe Called Quest, who collaborated with Dilla on all the Ummah produced tunes of their later years, Raphael Saadiq, who featues on vocals, and Dawn Robinson, formerly of En Vogue. Like the majority of Dilla’s work its beauty is in its simplicity; a rock guitar riff, bass and trademark Dilla lazy drums. What an ear for the sample….
