Baia Degli Angeli

David Williams – Come On Down Boogie People

Following the posting of a Giorgio Moroder tune earlier, I thought I’d slap up something else with Italian disco connections. Although this is a loft classic, played out at David Mancuso’s seminal proto-club haunt in the 70s, I first heard it on a Daniele Baldelli mix, Remember Baia 77-78, which kevvy k kindly put me on to some time ago.

Baia Degli Angeli was the first club in Italy to take the spirit of the New York disco scene to heart, with its emphasis on great tunes played on powerful soundsystems to a discerning crowd in beautiful surroundings. Check this endearingly pigeon-Englishy article below about the birth of Baia and its history.

The tune itself is not Italian, but it’s great and was apparently a favourite of the Baia DJs, Baldelli included. There’s a borderline excessive use of wig-out rock guitar, but the opening two minutes brings me out in goose bumps everytime and more than makes up for it. For full effect, close your eyes and picture yourself dancing to it as the first rays of the morning sun reach over the top of the Gabicce Mountain.

Speak of the devil – Daniel Baldelli is playing at the Horse Meat tonight (Sunday) for a measley fiver. Check out the blurb below for details… and they are going to record it for Giles Peterson's Radio 1 show if you can't make it tonight.

    "Horse Meat Disco

    Sunday november 19th

    DJ Daniele Baldelli
    (Cosmic/Baia Degli Angeli)

plus residents James Hillard and Severino

Horse Meat Disco, the queer party for everyone is now in its third year and still going strong. Part of is success has always been down to the amazing party vibe which promoters Jim and James engender, their devotion to being a stand alone party, the alternative of the alternative which attracts quite possibly the most diverse and crazy party crowd in London. From the beginning Horse Meat Disco was about music and spectacle, bringing some of the best DJs, known and unknown to play to a unique crowd and to share their passion for what is the starting point for modern dance music; Disco. An education in its own right Horse Meat Disco has dispelled the myths of a much maligned genre of music by going beyond the obvious and playing music across the disco spectrum and our very special guest for the 19th November is a definite high point.

Daniele Baldelli, the Italian equivalent to pioneering New York Disco disc-jock-gods Francis Grassso, David Mancuso and Nicky Siano, and chief architect of the early Electro party, Cosmic. From Rock, Funk and Soul 45s in 1969 on the Adriatic Coast, to playing Philly Soul, Reggae and muscular Disco at seminal club Baia Degli Angeli with Claudio Rispoli (a.k.a Moz Art), deep in the heart of Cattolica club land. Then came the legendary hotspot Cosmic, an era of hedonism that began in 1979. Here, Baldelli would be simultaneously spinning, triggering drum machines and samplers as water fountains boiled and bubbled frenetically behind him. Playing batucada Samba with Kraftwerk and Depeche Mode on 33 rpm mixed into African rhythms, and all on '70s turntable technology. A truly versatile DJ and music lover we know that he's going to blow the place apart. And with Support from fellow Italians Severino and James Hillard (well half italian) we'll be bringing a little bit of the Riviera to Vauxhall…... and about time too!!! The night is also going to be recorded for Giles Peterson's radio show on Radio 1. For more info on Daniele Baldelli check out
