This is from 2008, but Scottie B is from waaaay back. This track is a BMore version on Lil Wayne’s a milli, from Scottie’s Mr International EP and it’s proper lairy.

There’s a great interview on auralstates about how they started out coming up with the BMore club sound, and how they were influenced by the UK hip house and rave scene in the early 90’s. They both worked in record stores in Baltimore and would get UK stuff on import:

SB- Anyway the records from the UK were coming. They were hip house, and we were playing the instrumentals. Eventually we started making records just like the instrumentals. Those were the tablets for what we ended up doing. We mostly used different samples, but they used the Lynn Collins too. They relied on sampling notes from famous records, and we sampled words from hip-hop records. Instead of making the track a minute long and then crazy, which is what they started doing, we made the whole three or four minutes work for what we needed.

SC- It’s exactly the same way hip hop started, when you take into consideration we were playing the breaks of these imported records. It was only hot for about 20 seconds, but that drum pattern in that particular break is what started the whole thing. It was all about the drums. These UK records would start with drums, and that would be hot to us. Then is would get into the rave part, which was the shit that didn’t work for us. All those hoover synths.

SB- In fact, we used to take Hoovers and Spray Cans and only play the drums in the beginning.

	So that’s the beats sorted…

As for the rhymes, apart from the big bass thump, Miami Bass influenced downbeat thing, I don’t really get the whole dirty south thing. But then I found out about Sizzurp (or “that Purple Drank”) and it kind of made a bit more sense:

	Sizzurp original formula:

	Promethazine w/Codeine syrup
Any fruit flavored soda
A jolly rancher

Put it all in a styrofoam cup and enjoy

Reckon that would you drawl and want to listen to some slowed-down bass-heavy shit!</itunes:summary>

I think pretty much everyone else posted this one (probably in 2010 when it came out), but just for completeness and in case you missed it- a nice bit of “post dub step” goodness from Ramadanman (excellent name!) aka Pearson Sound aka David Kennedy.

Having been for me- as well as every other 30yo+ was-there-back-in-the-day-and-everything-was-better-then commentator- generally (with a few exceptions) dubstep is an undeniably deep, but otherwise poe-faced and joyless genre. 2011 was the year that dubstep- or post dubstep or whatever- thanks to labels like Swamp 81 and Hessle Audio started to become fun, and even fun-ky.

I’ll bang up a couple of others that fall in this category.</itunes:summary>

Dream Series is an odd track, it’s hardcore but not quite as we know it… The combination of crisp breakbeats and heavy bass with really quirky samples and synths reminds me very much of the Wagon Christ sound. I have no idea who Haute Control are (this rare 12” is their only release), but the production quality on the EP is really very high throughout and I’d be surprised if this is the only release from whoever made it. In fact the bleeps on here really remind me of the hook in DJ Mujava’s Township Funk that devastated dancefloors just a couple of years ago.

But anyway, these postings are mainly about the BASS, which in this track is a huge, warm and deep Reese-style bassline. The Reese bassline originated in the track Just Want Another Chance by Reese (aka Kevin Saunderson), but was later used on a plethora of jungle tracks due to it being absolutely killer… far too good not to use over and over again!</itunes:summary>

It’s much more of a straightforward hardcore banger than Night Stalker, and the intro includes a lot of ravey stabs that might make it sound dated to some ears. OK, OK, granted it does sound a little dated, but just wait for it: when the bassline drops (the first time is at about 1.12 in), it is absolutely MASSIVE!

I also like how this “Piano Mix” has no pianos in it at all.

Edcase – Untitled (Ed’s Venture EP Side A)

From an obscure 1993 white label, this is a Darkside tune from those amazing few months that saw the evolution of hardcore into jungle proper, when no two tunes sounded the same and literally anything went. The tune kicks off with some crazy chopped breakbeats that gradually fall into an almost military-style 4/4 march and stomp right along until 1.38 when the MONSTER bass drops and darkness descends with spooky melody and creeping insect beats. The atmosphere builds and there is more HUGE scary bass at 2.40, the choppy pots-and-pans breaks marching through the whole while.

What strikes me listening to this now is the sheer amount of stuff that goes on in the (too short!) four-and-a-bit minutes: the massive variety of breakbeats, bassdrops, noises and patterns – so many ideas thrown in to the mix that it just makes for totally exciting listening. These days each separate element would be worked up into a repetitive six-minute DJ tool, but back then they just threw it all in to the tune without dwelling on any one element too much.

I just fucking love this stuff… so much going on, so fresh, so totally ruff. Amazing.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Unity – Unity (Future Sound Of London Mix)

I recently downloaded the original version of this track over at Work It To The Bone – a real blast from the past ‘91 uplifting house track that I hadn’t heard for ages. Highly recommended – go and grab it now.

But then I remembered this absolutely awesome ‘92 “remix” by the Future Sound Of London, which preserves pretty much nothing at all of the original (there are a few vocal snippets used, and I guess it could be the same pianos too but speeded up so much here that I can’t tell for sure) and instead combines beautiful sampled melodies, monster breaks and massive pianos in a noticeably not-very-typical-FSOL way.

I’ve been racking my brain trying to think of the jungle tune that uses the same sampled melody from the opening of this tune (the original melody is from Fozbee & Cooz – Free Your Mind). I’m sure I had it in an LTJ Bukem mix years ago and should know what it is, but I just can’t place it.

In fact the more I think about it perhaps this is actually the tune I’m thinking of and Bukem just played it very fast in the mix. Help me out folks if you can – do you know any other tunes that sample the opening melody here?</itunes:summary>

    <itunes:summary>Dr S Gachet & MC GQ – Live @ AWOL, November 1993

A special treat for you here – over an hour of top quality ‘93 uplifting hardcore from the man like Dr S Gachet. This was one of my favourite tapes back in the day and I was gonna make a rip of it but instead managed to download this version which actually sounds better than my old tape does these days. We’ve had quite a few of the tracks here on Dilated Choonz over the last few years, but this is how they should really be heard – deep in the mix from one of the masters.

This comes from the glory days of AWOL at the Paradise Club (which later became The Complex and then the Blue Note before being demolished) when it was the jungle night to be at – they had the best soundsystem, the best DJs and the best MC of all time in GQ – you can hear him in full flow here. Tapes from raves/clubs (especially those with MCs) often lose something in translation to the bedroom, but somehow the AWOL tapes are amazing for conveying the buzz of the club. GQ is an amazing host and true Master of Ceremonies here – not just a Mic Controller: he knows the music intimately (the artists, the dubplates, etc.) , knows people’s names and where they’re from, and includes all in the party. One of my favourite bits on the tape is where even the medical man gets a shout out – “Big shout going out to the medical man… for any of those feeling sick and he’ll sort it right out – yes he will!”

Gachet brings the lighter side of ‘93 hardcore here – it’s (nearly) all pianos and beautiful uplifting rushy tracks, with very little of the darkside flavours that were big at the time (and which regular readers will know I also love).

There’s honestly something for everyone here and even if you think you don’t like hardcore I urge you to have a listen. If you don’t feel the rush at some point then you’re probably dead inside.

	Tracklisting
(from Hardscore.com – to be fair I got 12 of these myself, but then turned to the internet for a more complete listing.)

Side A
1. Studio 2 – Dirty Games [Studio 2]
Not the worst pop-rave cover version ever, but I can’t really sell it any stronger than that – it’s nice enough, but compared to the original they have managed to suck all the funk and energy out of the tune.

It’s not big and it’s not clever, but at least it’s topical.</itunes:summary>

From a rare & sought-after 1969 psychedelic-funk LP Original Popcorn (although I read somewhere that the recording was actually made in ‘67), here we have breaks that are looped, chopped, twisted and phased in much they same way 90’s Jungle does – putting it around 25 years ahead of its time. Impressive stuff.

Inta Warriors – Your Love Is Yours

Holy Saturday is a day when everyone rests up and gets ready for Easter – commemorating the time when Jesus just hung out in his tomb a bit – and so we’ll give Steve Gurley a break for today too.

Following on from the beautiful Music Is The Key we’ve got more great lighter-than-air hardcore, this time from the Inta Warriors, aka Grooverider himself. This came out on DeeJay Recordings back in 1993 and is played by Kenny Ken on one of my all-time favourite mixtapes from AWOL.

The track builds up and up over a long time (it is almost two minutes in before we get a really discernible breakbeat) and is all about the wicked hands-in-the-air synths and “baby your love is yours” vocal sample for quite a while. But then of course there’s the breaks too: wonderfully crafted chopped-up beats that simply fly.

Absolutely top quality stuff from The Rider.

Mr Blaze’s ouvre includes his own special takes on “Mr postman”, “the muppets”, “spongebob squarepants” and a bunch of other theme tunes for shows I’ve never heard of.

In this respect, the Baltimore sound is a good example of transatlantic exchange- it was influenced by labels like Shut up and Dance from the early UK breakbeat scene- which was cross bred (using Reason) with DC’s Go Go sound to create another underground sound and scene. Like the Addam’s family/inspector gadget sampling hip hop electro scene before it in the mid eighties, the UK rave scene gave us dubious “rave versions” of the Magic Roundabout, Trumpton, Rhubarb and Custard and god knows how many other wrong headed but sweetly naive and enthusiastic cross-over novelty tracks.

Johnny Blaze has been at it for yonks, but up until recently only available on extremely hard to find short-run vinyl pressings. now thanks to dedicated heads and long overdue recognition, you can get his stuff on represses and mp3 stores, like turntablelab. Still a bunch of stuff I cant get my mitts on, but I’m working on it.

One more of these Baltimore joints and then on with something else, promise…</itunes:summary>

PARTY PEOPLE: WE CAN SEE IF YOU CAN DANCE!

A treat for the weekend here in the form of some rip-roaring 1992 hardcore. This tune has pretty much everything you could possibly want in a rave anthem: from the opening melancholy strings, the massive techno stabs, slamming breakbeats and bouncing bassline, to the heart-wrenching hands-in-the-air piano section complete with cheesy-as-fuck flutey bits. Absolutely wicked stuff.

The original vinyl is pretty sought-after and will set you back a pretty penny, but some kind souls re-pressed it last year and you can still get hold of copies through Discogs.

Brother Typewriter – Spock’s Brain

From the continuing monthly adventures of the <a href="http://www.burninglodge.com"Burning Lodge ‘immersion composition’ speed-songwriting project, here is a slice of basic heavy techno from Brother Typewriter, previously featured on Dilated Choonz in a much more ambient guise with tracks like “Rendlesham 1980” and “Floating Off the Coast of Lowestoft”.

The monthly Burning Lodge sessions are getting increasingly bizarre: this month, participants were encouraged to write tracks for a project called “Shatner – the Musical”, and I’d been meaning to do something with the Star Trek episode “Spock’s Brain” for some time – so now was my chance.

For those of you not au fait with the original Star Trek’s most notoriously ludicrous episode, this Youtube compilation should provide brief background – as well as a few minutes of laughing uncontrollably.

For the technically minded, equipment used to produce the track comprised: (a) Waldorf Attack drum plugin (which also provided a bit of sub-bass; (b) Waldorf D-Pole Filter plugin; (c) Korg MS10 synthesiser (driven by midi-CV converter; (d) outboard mixer (to feed the Korg’s output back into the input for some serious mayhem). That’s it – plus the odd sample.

Done in one hour maximum, so it’s a bit sketchy, and not at all my usual style. But all good clean fun.

Waldorf :: without whom this track would not have been possible... back after collapsing in 2004, makers of the Blofeld synth (which I don't have) and some very nice plugins (which I do)

Alboy’s posting of a happy hardcore tune earlier this week got me thinking about whether I could ever be said to have enjoyed a hardcore tune. And the answer is… probably not.

Having said that, there have been interesting things done at the interface between hardcore and other genres.

Pete Namlook’s 1996 Elektro collaboration with ex-DAF man Robert Görl on Fax records sports a cover with a blue circle with black dots, which according to Fax’s colour-coded schema, means it’s a cross between hardcore and ambient. A workable combination, or a dog’s dinner?

IMHO, it works well. I’d say it’s more of a juxtaposition than a full fusion… sections of hardcore flowing into sections of ambient and vice-versa. But it certainly offers something different and a welcome change from the strict pigeonholing of Fax as an ‘ambient’ label.

Sadly, the experiment was not repeated, as 1997’s Elektro 2 was a more or less all-ambient affair. Perhaps the punters just couldn’t take it.

Like all Fax releases this was a limited edition (2000 copies I believe), although it’s not one of the most sought after CDs on the label so is available second-hand at reasonable prices.

Also, most of the Fax catalogue is now available through iTunes Plus – which means tracks are at 256kb/s (i.e. listenable quality, rather than crappy 128) and also you can convert the files to MP3 (if you want to play them on something other than an iPod. Which I do).

I only wish there was more of this kind of cross-genre work going on in electronic music, although it might be hard to hear about it if there was – with so many internet radio stations sticking to just one sub-sub-category of music, it’s hard for crossover to get a look-in much of the time. Oh how I miss the John Peel show – although Radio 3’s Late Junction sometimes throws up a wild card.</itunes:summary>
