<itunes:summary>LCD Soundsystem- “I Can Change” (London Session)

Thought this was from 2011, but dammit, it was released in Nov 2010.

This is just a great tune- James Murphy’s lyrics are splendid, and musically it’s highly reminiscent of Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (who are still going, can you believe?). This from the London Sessions recordings, which are particularly fine- found it hard to choose between this and all my friends.

2011 was a poignant year for LCD Soundsystem. Frontman James Murphy had turned 40, and he had previously said “I’ll just do this until I’m 40, and then I’ll do something else” which he duly did- so 2011 saw LCD play their last gig- at Madison Square Garden NYC. The place was packed out, and a friend of mine told me he left at the end of the set to beat the rush. This was after the first hour or so- only to find out on the way home that the show had gone on for another two hours. Strictly no re-admissions, unfortunately…

Here’s a live performance of this tune on Jools Holland</itunes:summary>

The duo behind it- Alex Green and Damon Kirkham- have been producing quality electronic music for a good long while now, and have a bunch of strings to their musical bows, releasing electro, acid, dnb and non-classifiable things that get filed under “post dubstep” (whatever that is) going by a variety of pseudonyms and project names, including Boddika (Al Green), Jon Convex (D Kirkham).

It’s all well worth checking out, but this tune stands out cos it’s so thoroughly moody and not a little creepy.</itunes:summary>

    <itunes:summary>little dragon- “blinking pigs”

Lovely little tune here, from Swedish outfit little dragon.

This quote from their website bio captures the effect- to begin with it sounds quite lame and twee, but as it goes on, it grows on you until you realise it’s really quite good:

“From the city of Gothenburg grew the birth of tiny creature- its breath full of fire, passion, death and dreams.
It lived in a fantasy called the electric forest.
This forest was thick with rustling secrets and infinite amounts of pine trees.
On occasional full moons the pine trees would light up in neon auras of lime and turquoise and the ground would shake with a steady rumble.
The tiny creature grew into a little dragon.
It wrestled with the large wind sometimes. The heat of its breath would weave in with the cool air and make patterns in the sky.
Although the creature was a powerful little beast, it was light as a feather and would often sleep on the leaf flowing in the breeze.
And there it would dream in a dream.
These dreams were without visuals and haunted by sounds. Electric sounds and beats would pump her little heart and make her sleep walk around the forest like a ghost dancing in the night.
And the aching of this lonely creature’s heart would be reflected in bittersweet melodies, both haunting and happy.”

	Or not…!

There are a few other fine numbers on themachine dreams album- twice, feather and never never in particular- well worth checking it out.</itunes:summary>

Like the El Michels Affair Wu-Tang re-works, am loving this rejuvenation of classic, digitally sequenced tracks through good old fashioned analogue musicianship.

    <itunes:summary>sbtrkt- “Timeless”

A cheeky little lift off mad decent- and a tidy reworking of Goldie’s Inner City Life by up and coming local producer subtract one- or sbtrkt for short.

Keeping the soaring strings and ominous bass of the original, and adding a few more deft atmospheric touches here and there, and replacing the rolling breaks with glitchy beats, bringing the mid-nineties sound into the late noughties.

Anecdotally, Goldie doesnt take too kindly to people ripping his shit (apparently punching out the last producer who tried) but this has reminded me of how fine timeless is as an album, and made me hunt down the red version, which I love but never had, so it’s swings and roundabouts Goldie, mate!

even if you do get your copyright violated, bootlegging and blogging is good for business

Of course, we’re bound to say that :)</itunes:summary>

I dont actually know what kit was used to create this track, but I do know that Autechre know how to use whatever kit they’ve got to produce dense and satisfying soundscapes better than most.

This track is off their third album- Tri Repetae. Apparently, their track names arent intended to mean much of anything, but I like the name of this one because it sounds like “U2”, pronounced with a brummy accent.

No resemblance to the paunchy celtic rockers in the sound, glad to say. Numan-esque spacey-synth introduction, huge swooping and soaring pitch-bent synth lines, breaking out into tight, clicky, driving percussion. It’s an awesome track.</itunes:summary>

Not suprisingly, this is not the first time we’ve heard from UR here on DC, what with most of us being long time Detroit fans. I’m pretty sure the Double K posted Journey of the Dragons some time ago, which is one of the finest pieces of electronic music ever produced imho.

I’ve known this tune for a long time, but for some reason did not know that it was a UR tune until recently. It made perfect sense when I found out as it has UR written all over it really. A dark brooding monster of a tune but, as you’d expect of a classic Detroit tune, heavily soulful , it hails from way back in 1991, which was the year I first discovered raving. My early rave experiences featured white gloves, whistles, vix vapo rub (which stung the eyes when it mingled with sweat and ran down into them) and lots of hardcore. This tune has worn better than most and is up there with UR’s finest finest moments.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Just a little review here of a great album, of which I feel compelled to write …... the album being Rebecca Closure’s (Wikipedia Entry) “Bonio Bonio Bonio”, an album so good she named it thrice. It’s due out on iTunes shortly, and you can listen to most of it on the Rebecca Closure Last.fm page here and Bonio Bonio Bonio Last.fm page, and also the MySpace page

So, anyway dissecting Bonio x 3 … the album starts with the fiery “You’re So Cheap”, an electro-latin curiosity that lets you know what you’re in for, the album keeps up with the good shit from then on. Next track “40,000” will please fans of Kenny Larkin or any early Detroit techno from the late 80s, and “Dangerous I Know” has shades of Juan Atkins/Model 500 “No UFOs”, albeit with its own more, how shall we say, specific and inimitable Rebecca Closure stamp…

“Face is the Place” keeps up the halycon-days-of-house feel, the lyrics being loud and clear about the location of where to put one’s booty. “La La La” kicks booty, rather than requesting where it’s put – a top track that’s aggressive but grooved-out in equal measure. Following, “Dirty Jungle Ginger” encapsulates the album cover concept, and has some of the finest examples of Closure’s trademark ‘cresto’ lyrics (‘cresto’ being the term for the invented vowel/consonant rhythmo-language that she uses in her music)

“Captain Bailey” is the crowdpleaser, complete with Black Lace-esque ‘come on, row!’ call to arms in the lyrics. The water’s rushing in, so you better row … especially once the Van Halen-esque-with-bongos ending comes in…(!)... and, once you’ve finished your rowing, have a rest and listen to the more 1990s referencing ‘straight up’ old skool dance track, in the form of “Fool”...which sets one up nicely for the luminous icing on this particular sonic cake, closing track “Key Largo” with it’s MONSTER Kraftwerkian keyboard riff, which evokes carefree dancing into the night on a Florida beach at sunset. YEAH!

So, if you like originality with specific reference points (hey, if that makes any sense, which it doesn’t), from Black Lace to Black Dog Productions to Willie Colon to Siouxsie Sioux, then by all means do yourself a favour and pick up “Bonio Bonio Bonio” when it comes out on iTunes!

	also…further to this… you can…

	(a) still buy the old Hotklub EP on iTunes here

	(b) check Closure’s film “Hotklub” (Wikipedia Entry) on the YouTube page

	(c) check a video of Closure playing live with Damo Suzuki from Can, also featuring Craig Tamlin of AJATSB on drums, and Justin Paton of Now on guitar, and me on bass.

	Peace out peeps!</itunes:summary>

Peace out peeps!

This tune dropped a while back, but I only clocked it after listening to a few mixes by Udachi, where it features to great effect- linked below.

Lo Fi Fnk are two ridiculously young looking chaps (they are actually in their mid twenties) hailing from Stockholm- their album boylife is proper 21st century electro pop. A bit too poppy for my own personal tastes, to be honest- but this stripped down mix from Moshi Moshi’s Jitset crew pulsates with bass and space and tickles me fancy in all the right places.

	Groovy stuff…

	The original version on youtube:</itunes:summary>

– posting tunes where the n-word features prominently throughout makes me kind of uncomfortable as a white liberal middle class sort of chap

But after listening to this tune on repeat for about half an hour last night and still finding it as mesmerisingly exciting on the last listen as I did on the first, I overcame these concerns (though I am suffering a bit today from wanting to sing back the un-PC chorus, which I am sure would get me in trouble with all sorts of people).

Bird Peterson’s remix is pitch perfect even before the filthy analogue line comes in at 2’01”- I havent played this out, but this track combined as it is with Busta at his best, I am pretty sure is the kind of tune that would blow up the spot quite nicely.

	Pow!</itunes:summary>

This came out in 83 on West End records, and the backing track consists of a pulsing, metronomic electro beat, with some crazy electro-funk keyboards going off all over it. Many peeps stick with the instrumental, but I’m all about the quirky, albeit somewhat hetero-normative vocal put in by Barbara Mason – the another man in question turns out to be his, rather than hers, and she runs through the various tell tale signs that should have raised her suspicions before. Perhaps it resonnates round there cos Boy 8 Bit is a 27 year old producer from south london- I’ve been checking out a fair bit of his stuff on Trouble and Bass and Mad Decent and he’s making some pretty out there sounds- all on fruity loops too, apparently.

Fog Bank is a tasteful melding of dancehall, hardcore and uk garage rhythms, mixed with hoover noises and “yeah! whoo!” samples, served on a bed of crispy, chassis-rumbling bass.

As mentioned earlier this blog, Pimp*Soul, and Dilate will be in effect at the Cobden, Kensal Road tonight, showcasing our sounds at Dub to Basics- a monthly collaboration with Back to Basics, the Dub Pistols and Mi7.

The night opens with live music and dj sets from Mi7 in the plush Grand Hall upstairs from 9pm, and we’ll be playing on the middle floor from 11 til 2. Dusting off their discs to bring the ruckus will be myself- the Mighty Alboy- and Salad. The venue’s great (see picture above and weblink below) well worth a trip in itself, and we’re looking forward to a bass-heavy workout featuring flavours old and new. It’s a fiver in, drinks are a bit pricy but that’s London innit! Bring your friends and family and join the jump up :)

Next one’s the Bank Holiday weekend, we’ll have the floor all night and the venue’s in the middle of carnival- ay caramba! (You comin, Big J?)

Quick note about the tune- it’s by Plastic Little and it rocks out loud. And we’ll be playing it very loud on Friday!</itunes:summary>

I’ve been meaning to post this for a while, and what with it being synth week (or perhaps synth fortnight), it seemed a good time to get on and do it.

Paul Hardcastle has to be one of the classic 80’s synth men. So much so that he even produced the Top Of The Pops Theme tune. Rather than likening him to some of the other artists that have appeared and been referred to on this blog in recent times, I’d say he was more like the UK’s answer to Harold Faltemeyer. Rainforest was released in 1984, the same year as Axel F, and both lean more towards the electro side of things, but I hope it still fits the bill for synth week. Whatever the case, I’ve always found it to be a very pleasant tune.</itunes:summary>

No numerically-synth-themed week would be complete without this! And it’s not here because the title fits so perfectly, its a bloody great electro-funk oddity from 1981, that got this edit on a 12” last year from the wonderful Tirk retrospective of the incredibly-gifted Blockhead that I hope everyone has a copy of by now. I’m also really loving his collaboration with Laura Weymouth on the recent and excellent Compass Point compilation that strut put out.

Some other just released and very excellent news… regular and faithful readers may remember a long, long time ago I posted Rico’s wonderful reworking of DC fave I Can’t Go For That by Hall & Oates? Well its finally been pressed, and very reasonably priced and available here on the Pointless Edits label. Pleading requests for re-uppage will fall upon deaf ears… go support the label – I’m sure Hall & Oates will have already done quite nicely for themselves off this particular track.

It also includes a great, funky, psyche-rock (Rare Earth?) edit by the Hardway Bros tht you can check out on their myspace page. As seen in discerning record boxes, right now.</itunes:summary>

1983 – a to die for bass line and it still sounds very wonderful, very conceptual, and very well appreciated by someone who doesn’t normally have big wads to blow on pricey vinyl like this.

You’ll all be pleased to know I’m not going to post the Ozric Tentacles 12” I picked up in deference to my dark and crusty past.</itunes:summary>
