<itunes:summary>David Bowie – John I’m Only Dancing (Again) 1975

Sorry for prolonged absence from this blog… I’ve returned to mark the occasion of David Bowie’s 65th birthday with a little tune from 1975, which (I think) was an outtake from the sessions for Young Americans. It’s essentially a funk remake of the 1972 single “John I’m Only Dancing”, and the basic musical structure was used with different lyrics and an additional main two-chord theme as “Stay” on Bowie’s 1976 Station To Station LP.

“John I’m Only Dancing (Again) 1975” was issued as a single in 1979 (in 7” and 12” versions – the version uploaded here is the 7 inch mix, largely because I didn’t have any mp3 copy of the 12 inch mix to hand, and my old 12 inch single of it is in storage at the moment). The 12” version was also an extra track on the early 90s CD reissues of Bowie’s back catalogue on Rykodisc (sadly the newer EMI reissues don’t have any extra tracks on them). I own it on an early 80s compilation called (strangely enough) “Rare Bowie” from which I might post another oddity soon…) Anyway I am to be more active here this year, so see yon soon.

note: the mp3 file begins with about 5 seconds of silence due to poor editing by me. Sorry.</itunes:summary>

Born and raised in Michigan, his sound is rooted in Motown soul. With his falsetto vocals and multiple-instrumental talents, he’s part Smokey, part Curtis and part Stevie, but although he’s real old school, and draws from the same well, he’s got his own style and sensibility too.

I strongly recommend getting his album A Strange Arrangement (see Stonesthrow link below).

He’s also something of a vinyl junkie and purveyor of soul rarities- if you can find it, I also recommend his Soul with a Hole mix.</itunes:summary>

Fortunately, this track from Alabama-born gospel veteran Naomi Shelton speaks rousingly for itself- and the pedigree of the artists involved, some of whom performed in the early days with James Brown and Wilson Pickett, is fully evident.

Daptone Records have signed her/them, and the What have you done LP, released in 2009 was their first major release. Get over there and check ‘em out!</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>BTSM – (We’ll Arrest You) When You Step Off The Plane

A little something topical for the kids now… those of you not on the Richard Branson space program probably know that the head of the Roman Catholic Church, the Pope, is visiting the UK over the next few days.

Last month, three members of the Burning Lodge immersion composition group entered a rehearsal studio in Bermondsey to record a selection of freeform jams, sonic experiments and in-jokes. In other words it was very similar to the recording sessions for Guns’n’Roses’s “Chinese Democracy” album but took about a billionth of the time.

Around 2 and a half hours of material emerged from the sessions – ranging from in the sweet spot to 1-bit unlistenable. This 8-minute effort, excerpted from a longer 34-minute track, was the most topical ‘song’ of the day (with the exception of a track about 25 per cent spending cuts and odes to the late Tony Wilson and Mr Dave Smith, creator of the Evolver synth).

My colleagues Ben and Martin (aka Brothers Buffalo and Sewing Machine) acquit themselves wonderfully. Ben delivers the lyrics with considerable elan: it’s the best delivery since Hunter S Thompson’s story about 1972 presidential candidate George McGovern who went up to a heckler, put his arm round the bastard, and said “I have a secret for you… kiss my ass.”

The music is a fractured groove – a bit messy, but certainly something that could be worked on. I’m particularly proud of the mighty irritating synth arpeggiation that comes in at about 5 minutes in – funky funky. The weird Hawkwind-style background noises are courtesy of the Dave Smith Evolver – a truly untameable beast.

If you want to read a good article about the true purpose of the pope’s visit, Andrew Brown in the Guardian has a go(o)d hypothesis.

I was going to go on the demo this Saturday but not sure if I’ll have enough time. But maybe.</itunes:summary>

I think Can’s “Blue Bag (Inside Paper)”, from their outtakes album Unlimited Edition sums up the Tories’ appeal to the electorate. Once you take away the paper-thin moderate veneer, it’s the same old “blue bag”. I won’t say more than that here, as I’m sure people aren’t reading this blog for a political rant. But feel free to provide one in the comments.

At least three more party-themed songs over the next couple of weeks before polling on May 6th. Kickin’.</itunes:summary>

This track is off the soundtrack to a sev’s heist movie called Diamonds, and features a nifty bass and strings introduction, followed by a medium heavy samplicious funk break, replete with what sounds like some kind of bassy clarinet, horns, jazz flute and even a harpsichord. Very groovy.

This post is as a tribute to the best gig I’ve seen in years – Holger Czukay at the Roundhouse, London on 14 May. It was the best performance I’d ever seen by an artist in the free bus pass age group, and indeed one of the best performances I’ve ever seen by an artist of any age. More details here.

My previous hero in this age group was country star Willie Nelson – largely because Willie had to record an album for the US Internal Revenue Service just because he owed so much unpaid income tax, and also he was busted for possession of mushrooms at age 73. ROCK’N’ROLL! I can’t see Willie Nelson contributing live improvisation over a Schubert string quartet at a gig, though (although I would be pleased to be proved wrong.)

I should say something about the track really… this is from Holger’s 1980 album “Movies” which was a pioneer in fusing Western dance music beats with sounds from “the East” (middle East in this case). “Cool In The Pool” from the same album is better known but I really like this one. One could call it “fusion” except that that particular category is reserved for the frenetic 1970s collision of jazz and rock… I’ve put this in the “funk/weird” category but it defies easy description.

Right, now it’s off to the car boot sale and I may post something that I find there later on (if it’s suitable. Or even better, if it’s not.)</itunes:summary>

The recent outbreak of ‘swine flu’ had me thinking about pig-themed tracks and to be honest, I couldn’t think of many good ones. Pink Floyd’s “Pigs (Three Different Ones)”, despite a welcome dig at Mary Whitehouse, is the weakest track on their Animals lp and the Beatles’ “Piggies” is a similarly duff component of the ridiculously uneven White Album.

Black Sabbath’s “War Pigs” is classic heavy metal, but a bit too much for 8.30am on Sunday morning.

And so I was left with Pigbag – a short-lived early 80s British funk outfit who achieved huge success with this single in 1982 before splitting up the year after. The 7” mix of this is reasonably easy to get hold of on umpteen “best of the 80s” compilations, and the reissue of Pigbag’s album Dr Heckle and Mr Jive on BMG in 2000 featured the 7” mix as an extra track. But I’m not sure if the 12” mix is still available elsewhere. Which is a shame, ‘cos it’s great.</itunes:summary>

This was a great charity shop find by Hal and me. Soul singer Billy Paul had already had a massive hit on the Philadelphia International Label with Me and Mrs Jones in 1972, which was a platinum selling US no.1.

In 1976 he released the album Let ‘Em In. The title track is a cover of the Wings song, from their album Wings at the Speed of Sound also released in 1976. The original Wings track is a great, but slightly twee affair listing various friends and family members. However, Billy manages to turn it into a funky piece of affirmative action.

Although probably best remembered for his softer, poppier stuff, Billy was no slouch when it came to more political material as the glorious Brown Baby and stonking Am I Black Enough For You would testify.

<p>This was a great charity shop find by Hal and me. Soul singer Billy Paul had already had a massive hit on the Philadelphia International Label with <I>Me and Mrs Jones</i> in 1972, which was a platinum selling US no.1. </p>

<p>In 1976 he released the album <i>Let &#8216;Em In</i>. The title track is a cover of the Wings song, from their album <I>Wings at the Speed of Sound</i> also released in 1976. The original Wings track is a great, but slightly twee affair listing various friends and family members. However, Billy manages to turn it into a funky piece of affirmative action. </p>

There’s been a fair bit of action around these parts recently, and I don’t wish to be left out so….

According to legend, Clutchy Hopkins is an instrumentalist/producer who has travelled the world on a spritual and musical quest, and left a series of recordings dating from the 1970’s onwards. I’m not so sure about this, but whoever Clutchy Hopkins is/are, they have left us with a clutch (sorry) of really nice instrumental tracks, heavy on the drums, and with a few sounds from around the globe chucked in.

More music to lie back and listen to than to dance to, it was difficult to pick one particular track to post, but this seemed as good as any. It comes from the album ‘Walking Backwards’, which was released earlier this year after (again according to legend) his daughter found some of his old tapes. Whatever the case, its both unusual and intriguing that Clutchy Hopkins’ true identity genuinely seems to remain a mystery. The MF Doom meets Clutchy Hopkins tracks are well worth checking out too.</itunes:summary>

Not much funk’n’soul music, and- apologies dear listeners- not much of anything gets posted by me with any frequency on DC of late.

To make some small amends for this sad and sorry state of affairs, here is a psychedelic soul bomb from the legendary Sly and the Family Stone.

Real genre defining stuff, coming as it did from Sly’s debut 1967 album A whole new thing, although plenty wigged-out, this track stands out from the other psychedelic hippy sounds coming out of San Francisco at the time by virtue of it having a great beat in place of the stodgy stylings of other artists in the genre. As well as raising the bar for psychedelic soul, it also pre-dated and most likely did something to define funk music as we know it. This, combined with his own personal and insane musical talent, his progressive approach to racial and sexual integration within the band, and general prolific quality output makes Sly for me one of the most coolest and most profound modern dance music influences of all time. He is also the only man ever to sound funky while yodelling.

Is that enough enthusing about Sly? Probably not, but it’ll have to do for now.

We could also get into Larry Graham’s prowess with the bass- he was the guy who taught all the other funkateers how to play- and he had a little box to add distortion- here’s a clip from youtube of the man in action:

Hip hop heads amongst you will recognise the kinda stoned chorus from straight to your heart was sampled on LL Cool J’s Mama said knock you out!.

In case you never heard it, or wanna hear it again, here’s the low-budget video featuring the muscular MC Ladies Love Cool James:

“Dont you ever, ever pull my lever!”</itunes:summary>

This got a spin last Sunday at the Horse Meat Disco, and also features on Filthy Luka’s contribution to DJ History’s monthly Mystery Mix series that you can download from here. It’s crammed full of soul and Brazillian beauties… not at all the disco stormer I was expecting, and I would hugely appreciate anyone who could tell me who the artiste is behind the frankly gobsmacking track at 38mins 30secs called I Just Can’t Help Myself.

As for the ludicrously feelgood funk offering from Mr Bear, I am just going to rip off what it says on Discogs as it says all you need to know…

“Its a very funky record and fun to listen to . Rhythm section is really jammin. Nice bottom on the Bass. Piano sounds like the piano player beat the hell out of it.The guys vocal is like a cross between Dr john and Joe cocker. Wish he made more records like this one.”

BTW, the picture is of the endangered Malayan sun bear.</itunes:summary>

This has been out and about for a while now, and I plugged it when it was first avaibale, so hopefully I might not ruffle too many feathers by whacking it up now… from the very excellent Creative Use edit label that we have had tracks from a few times before. This very tasty piece of vinyl seems to have sold out in record shops all over the UK, but I spotted that you coudl still get it from Rush Hour records here.

Mark-E does his trademark, languorously looped thang over this Gallery and Loft Labelle classic… cutting out of the Cat Steven cover verses and instead building it up to the more freestyle and very funky bit at the end where everyone gets to have a little turn in the spotlight while Patti muses on the day-to-day challenges of not having legs, lips or if one didn’t have hands to able to do the hand-jive.

Been meaning to check Mark-E’s DJ sets out for quite some time, and I just noticed on his my space that he’ll be playing at the Horse Meat Disco on the 26th of October.

The Climate Camp site has been occupied, and it’s all in full swing for its offical openning on Sunday. There’s a nice little piece in the Guardian last week on what to bring/expect that you can read here. I’m off this afternoon, so you won’t be hearing owt from me in the next week.

Oh also, check out this rather sobering countdown here.</itunes:summary>

Drummer Lenny White featured on Miles Davis’ Bitches Brew before moving on to work with Chick Corea’s Return to Forever Jazz funk fusion project in the mid to late 70s. Come the 80s, Lenny picked up the electro-funk baton, forming Twennynine with like minded individuals. Ride (perhaps dedicated to his favoured Ride cymbals?) is on the 1983 Attitude album released on Wounded Bird records under Lenny’s name alone. It appears on Maurice Fulton’s Bubbletease Communications Volume 7 mix which you can find on the RBMA site, where Mr Fulton makes full use of the killer groove that gets going about two and a half minutes in, looping it out to good effect. The fat bass, synth whoops, vocoded chant and those big clanging chords… best listened to LOUD.

I made a cameo appearance at the Lambeth Country show this weekend along with DC colleagues. I wasn’t able to stay long, but did manage to grab a quick pint of Chucklehead before I left. Highlight for me was where a gent running things in the small arena asked children in the audience if they wanted to ‘smell his stinky ferret’; grounds for arrest you might think although, to be fair, it was as part of the ferret racing demonstration.</itunes:summary>

I’ve been on a bit of a roll recently with some real gems nestled amidst the endless copies of Paul Young’s No Parlez in the charity shops. This funky little thing was but a single pound on 12” from the Cowley Road Oxfam in Oxford.

Stargard are perhaps better known for their wonderful disco anthem Wear It Out, which provided the sample for one of my guiltier house pleasures, Pete Heller’s Big Love. This is an earlier, less overtly disco offering and there’s lots to love.. jaunty guitars, great horn stabs, some wiggy synth and a few space noises towards the end.. in fact all the second instrumental half of the track is really one to get your groove on.

Back to the incessant slog of a bazillion and one things to do at the moment.. and its only going to get worse till after the first week in August.

EDIT: BTW, we now have a Dilated Choonz page in the Facebook blog network if anyone wants to add themselves as a reader, although I must admit, I am still wondering myself what the point is.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>James Otis White Jr – Baby Come On (Ulysses 82 edit)

Work, the immenence (sp?) of Climate Camp, and a myriad of other responsibilities are really playing havok with my life/blog balance.. it’s Sunday evening with a whole host of domestic things to attend to, and with no chance to blog in the next few days neither, so I’m banging this out on the hoof so as to not drop off the board entirely.

This is a welcome contribution from Ulysses 82, whose edit work we’ve had the pleasure of hosting before, and who wanted in on the synth action. I’ve never had the pleasure of the OG on this, but this edit is wonderful… chunky, synth-heavy funk from 83 that Prince would have been proud of.

The Ulysses 82 duo are concentrating their talents and dj sets on “working that deep, deep 80’s funk and boogie thing” in response to the disco-domination of recent years. They’re also putting on a monthly night at Favela Chic on Great Eastern Street called Ain’t It Black that showcases this type of sound. The next one is actually this Wednesday June 18. It goes on from 8 till 1 in the morning (a realistic prospect now that The Apprentice is over), and its free, so cheap-assed slags like me don’t have any excuse either. I have to catch a train to the dam at the butt-crack of dawn on Thursday, but I might see if I can rustle up some mid-week drinking buddies to swing on by. There’s a nice flyer for this, and a whole slew of other edits well worth checking out on the Ulysses 82 myspace page.

More stuff… a nice mention of Dilated Choonz on a BBC article on the resurgence of Ahmed Fakroun here – with blogs and edits being creditted with giving his international recognition a new lease of life.

My favourite people of this week are the Climate Camp folks who hijacked the coal train on the way to Drax power station and started shovelling it all out over the course of the day. Total respect, and here’s hoping everyone is safe and out of the nick. Pics, info and video here.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Gary Numan – Music for Chameleons

A few months back, a trip to a Clacton-on-Sea charity shop and the exchange of 25 new pence resulted in the acquisition of this remarkably well preserved piece of 7” vinyl, which is a fine example of the 80s sub-genre known as “synth plus fancy bass”. Fretless, slap or even Chapman stick, many bands played ‘em in the 80s, with the keyboards kept safely in the upper part of the frequency register.

Gary Numan started off as a rather new-wavey, rocker proposition in 1977-8 with his band Tubeway Army before discovering the Polymoog synthesiser – usually thought to be a turkey of the highest order by synth afficionados, but he used it to great effect on “Are ‘Friends’ Electric?” “Cars” and “Down in the Park”, to name but three, so once again the experts are talking total shite.

By ‘82, when this track was recorded, Numan was in a commercial tailspin, just another guy with a collection of synths and a funny voice in a music industry where ‘real instruments’ were becoming the preserve of heavy metallers. His response was to head for a funkier sound, drafting in bassist Pino Palladino for some fretless mayhem. It worked so well that Norfolk-based DJ Alan Partridge was still spotted playing ‘air bass’ to this track as late as 2002 (see clip below). Partridge is now rumoured to be teaming up with Numan for an album of Japan covers.</itunes:summary>

<p>Gary Numan started off as a rather new-wavey, rocker proposition in 1977-8 with his band Tubeway Army before discovering the Polymoog synthesiser &#8211; usually thought to be a turkey of the highest order by synth afficionados, but he used it to great effect on &#8220;Are &#8216;Friends&#8217; Electric?&#8221; &#8220;Cars&#8221; and &#8220;Down in the Park&#8221;, to name but three, so once again the experts are talking total shite. </p>

<p>By &#8216;82, when this track was recorded, Numan was in a commercial tailspin, just another guy with a collection of synths and a funny voice in a music industry where &#8216;real instruments&#8217; were becoming the preserve of heavy metallers. His response was to head for a funkier sound, drafting in bassist Pino Palladino for some fretless mayhem. It worked so well that Norfolk-based DJ Alan Partridge was still spotted playing &#8216;air bass&#8217; to this track as late as 2002 (see clip below). Partridge is now rumoured to be teaming up with Numan for an album of Japan covers.</p>
