<itunes:summary>Michelle Amador – Because Of You (Yoruba Soul Mix)

This is a track that has cropped up for me a couple of times recently – I first heard it about 3 weeks ago on the radio (probably on Flex FM I think) and then again yesterday when I was pointed to an old Rahaan Mix.

Both times it completely grabbed my attention, it’s got a really sleazy, hypnotic groove and this amazing vocal, reminiscent of Nicolette’s voice but with a quality all of it’s own.

So I tried Googling parts of the lyrics to find out what the record is – this works for most songs these days (well at least the ones I’ve wanted to find out about), but there’s not a single hit for this. Next I tried the good old-fashioned way of asking someone who might know – our own Kevvy K – but he didn’t. He did, however, suggest trying Shazam (just call 2580 from your mobile phone, pop pickers) which I’ve not done before. At 50p a go it seems pretty expensive to my innate frugality, but what the hell I gave it a whirl and second time lucky it came up with the goods (it failed the first time but told me to turn it up very loud and try again!).

Turns out it’s from way back in 2007 so sorry if it’s old news to you, it still sounds completely fresh to me, I’ve had it on four times this morning already!</itunes:summary>

    <itunes:summary>Blawan – “Getting Me Down”

	###THE GRAND FINALE!!!###

This track is easily the stand-out floor-killer from 2011. I first heard it on Blawan’s mix on FACT magazine- which is a superb and often absurdly deep acid/house workout, linked below- and when this track drops at 26’55” it completely blows up!

Love everything about this track- the grinding muted bass growl, the plucky percussion, and the completely mutated mashing of the original Brandy vocal- even that it was only available as a limited pressing single sided 12” (and I’ve got one!)

Like any self-respecting Yorkshireman Blawan is no one trick pony and isnt tied down to any one style- his releases on Hessle Audio and good old R&S records mark Jamie Roberts out as a man to watch (or listen to, anyway).

Awesome stuff, and no other tune came close to topping it in 2011.

and just for jolly, here’s the original track:</itunes:summary>

And this was the first track that made me go out to a record shop, seek out and buy an actual freshly minted slab of vinyl. A very nice slab of 180g vinyl it is too.

Awesome tune from Ray Keith’s nephew David O’Grady- formerly and amusingly known as Joy Orbison, now simply Joy O.

Following in the tradition of a long line of tunes about over-indulgence, for which I have always had a soft spot.

	Other greats include:

	4Hero’s Mr Kirk’s Nightmare

Reprised on Acen’s close your eyes

<itunes:summary>Bam Bam – Then There Was Light!

A quick heads-up about this new track from (acid) house legend Chris Westbrook AKA Bam Bam – grab the download from Soundcloud ASAP as it’s only free for 2 weeks then it goes for sale online.

It’s a top tune, a massive summertime house banger with some fat warm bass, monster acid squidge (something that’s far too rare these days) and vocals that I can’t help thinking are a cheeky nod to Lil’ Louis’ classic Blackout.

Bam Bam is responsible for some all-time classic tracks including “Give It To Me” and the mildly terrifying “Where’s Your Child”. In addition his Westbrook Records label brought us Mike Dunn’s Magic Feet and Armando’s Land Of Confusion, arguably two of the best and most influential acid tracks of all time.

To be honest I’m not really up to speed with his more recent work but going on the quality of this track I’m off now to correct this.

So grab this while you can, or if you’re already too late for the download have a listen here and then go find somewhere to buy it!

	———UPDATE 14th JULY———
Chris has upped some of the tracks I mentioned to Soundcloud – go check them out!

<itunes:summary>dj milton – “late nite creep”

A brace of beauties for Saturday night, from Chicago’s prolific Dance Mania label.

The label started out in the mid eighties and pioneered early chicago house and acid house sounds, and in the early nineties went on to become the primo producer of the ghetto house sound, featuring all the key players like DJ Deeon Slugo and DJ Funk (who went on to buy the label in 2005). Pretty much all the best harder-edged artists from Chicago have had releases on Dance Mania.

These tracks are from two of the unsung heroes of the early nineties scene.

This one from Milton Jones- aka DJ Milton- is a personal favourite, featuring the steadfast hard edge, heavy swung drum sounds, 4 to the floor kick, cheeky b-line and (in this case, moderate) sleaziness.

Nice little bit of documentary here:</itunes:summary>

I’d like to point you in the direction of a couple of lovely tracks from Timo Camillo and Alevol, released on their new label 26 Tea Drops. They’re ambient house guaranteed to soften your mood, incredibly laid back and with a large pinch of KDJ influence.

Timo Camillo’s A New Day grows gradually from the opening synth strings with the addition of chunky piano chords and bongos, eventually building beautifully into a subtle house groove. Alveol’s epic Blue Lips continues in the same mood with a super-subtle but insistent beat backed by mellow chords and layered with darting little snatches of synth twiddles.

Both tracks are beautifully and thoughtfully produced to give some of the nicest chill-out music you’re likely to hear. Check them out on SoundCloud, and if you like them it’s got to be worth supportiung the artists by buying the mp3s – only £2.29 for the pair, cheaper than almost anything these days!

So, just in time for Christmas, here’s a great house number from back in 1993, taken from one of the prolific Glenn Underground’s earliest releases – the Future Shock EP on the Dutch label Djax-Up-Beats.

Glenn is at the forefront of Chicago’s Deep House scene, and has been for many years now. His tunes and mixes these days are about as smooth as you can possibly imagine, good stuff, but if I’m honest perhaps a little too well-polished for my taste. With these early productions, though, a few rough edges remain, giving them just enough bite to grab the attention.</itunes:summary>

Sad news that after a brief fight with pancreatic cancer, outstanding Detroit house and techno producer Aaron Carl died on Thursday.

Mentored in composition and production in the mid-nineties by Mad Mike Banks, he went on to create stand out house tracks and founded Wallshaker music.

Another great artist whose life and potential has been cut short by cancer- a sad loss to his friends and family and the world.

“For years, I’ve noticed I was ‘hated’. Now at this time in my life, I realize that I’m actually loved.”

This is a tune that I’ve loved for years and years but only just found out what it is. I know it intimately from an amazing Jon Da Silva tape from the Hacienda that got caned round my way back in 1992. If you’ve been keeping up with the comments on here you’ll know I recently read Peter Hook’s “The Hacienda: How Not To Run A Club”, where after all these years I finally found a track list for the tape (and also discovered that it was recorded at the Robs Records Party on Wednesday 4th March 1992). I’m currently in the process of tracking down some of the tunes that I’ve never identified up to now, and this is one of them.

It was released in 1991 on New York’s Nu Groove Records, and is one of those great tracks that sits right on the boundary of House and Techno (and in this case also Acid). After a short intro the groove builds as drums are gradullay added to the mix. Urgency is added to the already driving bassline as the awesome 303 acid line flitters in and out, and that’s about it – nothing too big or clever: just a great tune.</itunes:summary>

Apologies to our regular listeners for inactivity at DC- no posts here for a month, shocking indolence from me and our reduced roster of co-bloggers.

To make some small amends, here is a gem of a track from Boo Williams on the mighty Relief Records label

Born and raised on Chicago’s south side, Boo Williams’ career as DJ/producer, began back when house music was still creating an identity for itself. He was raised on a healthy diet of Larry Heard, Marshall Jefferson, Frankie Knuckles and Ron Hardy, and over the years has become part of the house music foundation himself.

This track is a long time favourite of mine and various others of the dilate posse and crew. I remember a bunch of us first hearing it on the Colin Faver show on Kiss FM in the back of our mate Rob’s car as we headed home to our communal pad in Hendon- the awesome combination of huge, loose breaks with the tight-assed swing of the drum track and crazy synth madness got us all very excited, and had us dashing out to our favourite record stores to try and find it the next day.

Still a stone cold, stand out classic to this day…</itunes:summary>

And finally, something I know the Squeaker loves dearly but may not have had out in a while… something to help shattered new parents relax, and if they’re lucky it might even help send little Max off to sleep.

Space is probably the best ambient house record ever made. To listen to it is to journey across the Solar System, at times experiencing true beauty and at times being afraid, very afraid. This part of the journey – Jupiter – comes from the end of Side 1 and is a beautiful mellow section which calms the nerves following Mars, the scariest most darkside part of the LP that really gets your heart pounding. The album is a continuous mix and makes sense best in its entirety rather than on a track-by-track basis, so it was tricky to pick a single track to post. The lullaby at the end of this makes it most appropriate I think.

If you don’t know it then go and get it now. You need Space in your life.

Space is the work of Jimmy Cauty, who is most famous for being half of the KLF (Space was released on KLF Communications). Over the years he has been involved with loads of interesting & subversive music and visual arts projects too numerous to mention here – he featured in a very early incarnation of The Orb, has remixed various people as “The Scourge Of The Earth”, and one of my favourite of his recent works is a set of “Scab” stamps issued during the UK postal strikes a little while back, and which you can buy here if you have a lot of money to spare.</itunes:summary>

It’s an absolute belter of a tune and no mistake.

Alex Neri has been a player in the Italian house scene for years and produced the stone-cold classics Moving Power (To The Music) and Move Your Body (To The Sound) as half of Korda in 1991. For the last ten years he has been making chunky club house music as part of the Planet Funk ensemble.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Bassomatic – Fascinating Rhythm (Soul Odyssey Mix)

While I’m at it there’s no harm in breaking out this classic, also from 1990. Fascinating Rhythm was first released on Orbit’s own Guerilla label but soon picked up by Virgin to secure a major label release and sales that made it (probably) William Orbit’s biggest pre-Madonna chart success, hitting a respectable number 9 in the UK charts back in September 1990.

Orbit’s output as Bassomatic was dancefloor-oriented in a way the Strange Cargo stuff isn’t, and to be honest it’s pretty hit-and-miss. Maybe more miss than hit in fact, but Fascinating Rhythm is a classic Soul II Soul-bandwagon-jumping 90’s pop dance tune for sure. On another day I’d have gone for the full-on-raving In The Realm Of The Senses but while it’s also a great track it has much less laid-back-chilling-in-the-sun appeal than Fascinating Rhythm. This Soul Odyssey Mix omits the cheesy early 90’s rap, which may or may not be a good thing depending on your outlook. Given the discerning tastes of our rapidly diminishing readership I thought it best to go with this version though.

—- STOP PRESS—- STOP PRESS—- STOP PRESS—-
OK I’ve just found William Orbit’s website and there is tons of great stuff to check out, including a collection of “streamcasters” that provide a range of William Orbit radio stations like Ambience and Bassomatic. Brilliant stuff – get yourself over there!</itunes:summary>

We’ve seen some beautiful weather here in London over the last couple of weeks, and yesterday it actually felt warm out too so it’s time to break out some sunshine tunes!

I’ll start with a couple of beauties from William Orbit’s 1990 LP Strange Cargo 2 (which is, as you might guess, the follow-up to 1989’s Strange Cargo and predecessor of 1993’s Strange Cargo 3). Prior to producing some top-class pop records for the likes of Madonna, All Saints and Sugababes (presumably for X amount of dollar) Orbit honed his lush production style crafting a bunch of ambient-house-ish stuff on these LPs (and I think he played guitar and bass on them too).

This track is pure chilling-on-a-beach-somewhere stuff: lovely little guitar licks, varied percussion and a bassline with more than enough groove to get your toes tapping.</itunes:summary>
