I’m very much enjoying this right now so thought I’d share, it’s been a while I know. From when trance was still good, this track comes from 1993’s Strictly 4 Groovers, an LP from rave favourites the legendary DiY soundsystem crew.

It’s a slow builder, starting off with some trancey arpeggiated synths, the lush bassline comes in after a minute or so, the spacey atmosphere grows with hints of cymbal until the beat finally arrives three minutes in. even then it’s another minute until the handclaps (my favourite) hit and we’re into full-on gorgeous ambient trance.

Try it, you just might like it.

And if you’re unfamiliar with DiY then there are worse places you could start than the seminal DiY Jack set from 1992’s Castlemoreton festival – check the link below to download the whole set.</itunes:summary>

	###THE GRAND FINALE!!!###

This track is easily the stand-out floor-killer from 2011. I first heard it on Blawan’s mix on FACT magazine- which is a superb and often absurdly deep acid/house workout, linked below- and when this track drops at 26’55” it completely blows up!

Love everything about this track- the grinding muted bass growl, the plucky percussion, and the completely mutated mashing of the original Brandy vocal- even that it was only available as a limited pressing single sided 12” (and I’ve got one!)

Like any self-respecting Yorkshireman Blawan is no one trick pony and isnt tied down to any one style- his releases on Hessle Audio and good old R&S records mark Jamie Roberts out as a man to watch (or listen to, anyway).

Awesome stuff, and no other tune came close to topping it in 2011.

and just for jolly, here’s the original track:</itunes:summary>

And this was the first track that made me go out to a record shop, seek out and buy an actual freshly minted slab of vinyl. A very nice slab of 180g vinyl it is too.

Awesome tune from Ray Keith’s nephew David O’Grady- formerly and amusingly known as Joy Orbison, now simply Joy O.

Following in the tradition of a long line of tunes about over-indulgence, for which I have always had a soft spot.

	Other greats include:

Having been for me- as well as every other 30yo+ was-there-back-in-the-day-and-everything-was-better-then commentator- generally (with a few exceptions) dubstep is an undeniably deep, but otherwise poe-faced and joyless genre. 2011 was the year that dubstep- or post dubstep or whatever- thanks to labels like Swamp 81 and Hessle Audio started to become fun, and even fun-ky.

I’ll bang up a couple of others that fall in this category.</itunes:summary>

<p>I&#8217;ll bang up a couple of others that fall in this category.</p><ul>

Which is as well, else I wouldnt be able to start with this- from June 2007.

I know next to nothing about it, except that it’s minimal, bleepy, weird, almost not music, and I like it.

And that’s what matters, really- it is my top ten, after all…</itunes:summary>

The duo behind it- Alex Green and Damon Kirkham- have been producing quality electronic music for a good long while now, and have a bunch of strings to their musical bows, releasing electro, acid, dnb and non-classifiable things that get filed under “post dubstep” (whatever that is) going by a variety of pseudonyms and project names, including Boddika (Al Green), Jon Convex (D Kirkham).

It’s all well worth checking out, but this tune stands out cos it’s so thoroughly moody and not a little creepy.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Bam Bam – Then There Was Light!

A quick heads-up about this new track from (acid) house legend Chris Westbrook AKA Bam Bam – grab the download from Soundcloud ASAP as it’s only free for 2 weeks then it goes for sale online.

It’s a top tune, a massive summertime house banger with some fat warm bass, monster acid squidge (something that’s far too rare these days) and vocals that I can’t help thinking are a cheeky nod to Lil’ Louis’ classic Blackout.

Bam Bam is responsible for some all-time classic tracks including “Give It To Me” and the mildly terrifying “Where’s Your Child”. In addition his Westbrook Records label brought us Mike Dunn’s Magic Feet and Armando’s Land Of Confusion, arguably two of the best and most influential acid tracks of all time.

To be honest I’m not really up to speed with his more recent work but going on the quality of this track I’m off now to correct this.

So grab this while you can, or if you’re already too late for the download have a listen here and then go find somewhere to buy it!

	———UPDATE 14th JULY———
Chris has upped some of the tracks I mentioned to Soundcloud – go check them out!

<itunes:summary>dj milton – “late nite creep”

A brace of beauties for Saturday night, from Chicago’s prolific Dance Mania label.

The label started out in the mid eighties and pioneered early chicago house and acid house sounds, and in the early nineties went on to become the primo producer of the ghetto house sound, featuring all the key players like DJ Deeon Slugo and DJ Funk (who went on to buy the label in 2005). Pretty much all the best harder-edged artists from Chicago have had releases on Dance Mania.

These tracks are from two of the unsung heroes of the early nineties scene.

This one from Milton Jones- aka DJ Milton- is a personal favourite, featuring the steadfast hard edge, heavy swung drum sounds, 4 to the floor kick, cheeky b-line and (in this case, moderate) sleaziness.

Nice little bit of documentary here:</itunes:summary>

Lovely little tune here, from Swedish outfit little dragon.

This quote from their website bio captures the effect- to begin with it sounds quite lame and twee, but as it goes on, it grows on you until you realise it’s really quite good:

“From the city of Gothenburg grew the birth of tiny creature- its breath full of fire, passion, death and dreams.
It lived in a fantasy called the electric forest.
This forest was thick with rustling secrets and infinite amounts of pine trees.
On occasional full moons the pine trees would light up in neon auras of lime and turquoise and the ground would shake with a steady rumble.
The tiny creature grew into a little dragon.
It wrestled with the large wind sometimes. The heat of its breath would weave in with the cool air and make patterns in the sky.
Although the creature was a powerful little beast, it was light as a feather and would often sleep on the leaf flowing in the breeze.
And there it would dream in a dream.
These dreams were without visuals and haunted by sounds. Electric sounds and beats would pump her little heart and make her sleep walk around the forest like a ghost dancing in the night.
And the aching of this lonely creature’s heart would be reflected in bittersweet melodies, both haunting and happy.”

	Or not…!

There are a few other fine numbers on themachine dreams album- twice, feather and never never in particular- well worth checking it out.</itunes:summary>

(There were a few re-issues in 1993-94, following the success of the Selected Ambient Works LP.)

I can honestly say they just don’t make them like this any more, and it’s a shame…

I could rant here about how the “best of 2010” lists that currently abound are populated by music that I would variously label self-indulgent, directionless, joyless and overly-abrasive… In fact I just deleted a long paragraph doing just like that, naming names along the way.

But instead of dwelling on the negative, why don’t we just sit back and enjoy the majesty of Analogue Bubblebath once more? OK then, lovely.</itunes:summary>

Sad news that after a brief fight with pancreatic cancer, outstanding Detroit house and techno producer Aaron Carl died on Thursday.

Mentored in composition and production in the mid-nineties by Mad Mike Banks, he went on to create stand out house tracks and founded Wallshaker music.

Another great artist whose life and potential has been cut short by cancer- a sad loss to his friends and family and the world.

“For years, I’ve noticed I was ‘hated’. Now at this time in my life, I realize that I’m actually loved.”

	Rest in Peace</itunes:summary>

    <itunes:summary>Sun Electric – Sarotti

I haven’t posted for ages – been ridiculously busy, but am beginning to see light at the end of the tunnel now, so I have been scouring emusic for some long-lost R&S classics and was very pleased to find this.

Sun Electric were a duo from Berlin (Tom Thiel and Max Loderbauer) who became friends with The Orb and Thomas Fehlmann after releasing a 12” single called “O’Locco” in 1990. That particular track has since gone on to about 200 different remix versions. The track featured here – “Sarotti” – is from their 1993 LP release Sun Electric (sometimes known as Natural Energy) on R&S Records , which Alboy had (along with just about every other ambient techno LP released that year and a good deal of non-ambient ones too.)

At least I think this release was an album – it may have been a double 12” single. At any rate it was album-length (about 45 minutes).

Due to my very poor tape-labelling skills I got somehow mixed up for many years thinking that this track was “O’Locco” and then got v confused when I used to pick up remixes of “O’Locco” on the net and they sounded nothing like this. (Most of them didn’t sound that much like each other either, so you can understand why I was confused…)

But whatever it’s called it’s a classic. 6 minutes 21 but it could have gone on for a whole LP side and not outstayed its welcome. Beautiful.</itunes:summary>
